Right everyone, let’s get into it. We’ve all seen the Apocalypse movies and here’s what we know:
- If you aren’t already dead, lots and lots of people are so there will be no power and no easy to obtain food or water
- It appears you can out run most trouble be it Zombies or people in a working vehicle of some type
- If people aren’t dead or a turned into a Zombie they will probably want what you have and try and kill you for it.
- You’ll need weapons, skills and equipment
There may come a time in your post apocalypse survival career where you have zip down to the “local” and pick up some supplies. Sadly, your Toyota Camry just isn’t going to cut the mustard, to really survive and let everyone else see that you’re not to be messed with you need a vehicle with presence, something shall we say, serious.
Let’s take a look at my list of cars that will have the best chance of surviving a in a post apocalypse environment.
DAF TwinTurbo Dakar Rally Truck
What: A quirky Dutch brand, DAF used one of these crazy trucks to win the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1987.
Why it’s good for an apocalypse: This monster rig is a semi-truck filled with spare tires, navigation equipment and an 11.6-liter turbo-diesel engine for each axle. These DAF things were so powerful

You need to check out TATRA Trucks, my friend. These things are 8×8 beasts that can even roll down hills sideways, get back up, and then roll straight up 100% + grades without faulting once.

If you’re including the Knight Conquest, you really shouldn’t overlook the perennial Kombat T98
Allright i’ll look her up and see what’s it all about!
All of these vehicles are bad choices for the apocalypse. They’re mostly custom, so finding spare parts will be nigh impossible, unless you live near a production facility to begin with. They’re extraordinarily expensive. Based on their size, I’d say they use fuel very quickly.
Your best bet? An old, domestic diesel pickup. Parts are cheap and easily available- there are probably already half a dozen in your neighborhood. They’re easy to work on; very, very capable with some minor upgrades; and much better on fuel (and being diesel, you can make your own because the refineries won’t be up and running, nor will existing supplies at gas stations be fit for use after a few months). And without a modern computer onboard, you don’t have to worry about replacing silly electronics. Post-apocalypse, you want your vehicle repairs to be as simple as possible.
Hi Aaron, you know what I completely agree with you. My old 60series Land cruiser would be ideal, however it’s fun to explore other options even if the are fantasy. I’d love to get around in the Striker, until like you say it breaks down…..

We dont have gas troubles right?? cause any of those will need a huge amount of gas…..that means more time searching a gas station, than surviving.
Hi Javier, I agree, this piece was part fantasy by me, however would be fantastic right up the point where the gas ran out…. Cheers
